History of ReflexologyThe earliest evidence dates back to Egypt 3000BC, with a tomb painting near Cairo. Temple stone carvings were found in Japan 700BC of Buddha’s upturned feet. China’s Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) dates back 1000’s of years using pressure points on the hands & feet for healing the whole body holistically. Qi (or Chi), also known as, vital energy, air, breath and steam are all essential for life.
Qi blockages are the route cause to ill health. All TCM methods such as Acupuncture, Acupressure, Tuina and Reflexology aim to unblock these stagnations improving Qi flow and rebalance energies. This is a principle by which Reflexology works today. During the 1930’s Eunice Ingham developed the foot chart we use in the west today. This then brings us up to present day where the AoR, Association of Reflexology, has been the leading association since 1984. The AoR keeps up to date with health issues and research and abides by a strict code if conduct and ethics.
About ReflexologyThe body is made up of energy as well as the physical, mental and emotional being. When the whole being is in balance this energy flows freely. Life often leads to stress and tension, interrupting the lovely free flow of energy which, if not relieved, may eventually result in a physical, mental or emotional disorder. Reflexology, Tuina, Bach Flower Essences and many other holistic therapies encourage relaxation, giving the body tools to heal its self and release blockages stored within us.
How does Reflexology work?Reflexology works in a very subtle yet powerful way to aid the well being of the person. A Reflexologist uses light or strong pressure on Reflex points on the feet or hands, which mirror body organs and systems. For example, the area on the big toe relates to the head and neck and the area just underneath the little toe relates to the shoulder. The treatment will be unique to each person, concentrating on specific areas that need attention.
What conditions can it help?Reflexology is a holistic treatment, working on both mind and body to encourage balance within. It is a safe and non invasive treatment suitable for working with most conditions including:
Stress related conditions Asthma Eczema Menstrual & menopausal problems Back pain Stiff necks Frozen shoulders IBS Grief Musculo-skeletal pain Conception difficulties Pre and post operative care Cancer care support.
It is also effective for pregnancy care (pre & post natal).
How many treatments do I need? For those experiencing a specific symptom, the standard course of treatment is once or twice a week for six to ten weeks, depending on the condition and individual. For prevention, general balancing and relaxation the frequency can be less.
What happens during a treatment? The session lasts approximately 1 hour. The client remains fully clothed, removing only shoes and socks. A reclining chair or treatment couch will be used for you to lie on. Your feet will be cleansed before the treatment begins. Feedback between client and practitioner will be discussed with a light refreshment. |
